Meet the Team – Ernis Fida, HGV Driver

Ever wondered what it’s really like to be an HGV driver in the UK?

We hosted an exclusive interview with one of Star Platform’s professional drivers, who shared a behind-the-scenes look at his daily routine, delivery schedule, and the essential kit he transports across the country.

What time does your day usually start, and what’s the first thing that you do?

My day typically begins at 5 a.m. I start by collecting the necessary paperwork and vehicle keys, followed by a thorough vehicle inspection that normally takes 10 to 15 minutes. Once that’s complete, I review the delivery schedule and plan the loading of the machines accordingly.

What’s a typical route or delivery schedule?

Being based in Luton, many of our deliveries are within London – particularly central London, where I oversee numerous collections and drop-offs. When heading north, I often travel to locations such as Northampton, Peterborough, Milton Keynes, and Bedford. We generally avoid long-distance routes during the day, thanks to well-organised planning that keeps us working locally.

What kind of kit do you usually transport, and how do you make sure it’s handled safely?

Our core equipment includes Skyjack Scissor Lifts, especially the 3219 model, along with various cherry pickers and boom lifts from Niftylift – such as the HR12, HR15, HR17, HR21, and HR28. While we do handle other brands like Dingli machinery, these are the most common. Safety is paramount: all equipment is securely chained down, and we follow strict procedures to ensure everything is transported safely.

How do you prepare for long drives?

Preparation starts with a strong coffee and a good night’s sleep. I also bring snacks and queue up a podcast to stay alert and focused during extended journeys. These small routines make a big difference.

What’s the most important skill for an HGV driver to have?

Safety is the top priority. It’s essential to take your time, especially when transporting heavy machinery. Proper securing of equipment, situational awareness, and driving experience all play a critical role. Operating large vehicles requires constant attention to surroundings to prevent accidents or damage.

Are there any unexpected challenges you face on the road?

Occasionally, we face delays at collection sites or arrive to find machines that haven’t been charged. Traffic congestion is another common challenge, but it’s part of the job and something we learn to manage.

What’s your favourite part about working for Star Platforms?

I really enjoy being out on the road, visiting different locations, and meeting new people. Driving the larger machines – especially boom lifts – is something I genuinely look forward to.

What activities do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I spend most of my free time with my son. We go on drives, play together, and enjoy quality time. Given the long hours we sometimes work, making the most of family time is very important to me.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in HGV driving?

Always prioritise safety and stay aware of your surroundings. If you’re just starting out, look for a company like Star Platforms – one that values its drivers and upholds high safety and professional standards. Begin with a reputable employer, gain experience, and then decide where you want to take your career. Working with a supportive team also makes a huge difference in your day-to-day experience.
