How Long Does IPAF Training Last?

IPAF training typically takes one day to complete, but can last between one and two days, depending on the course category and the trainee’s experience level.

This duration includes a mix of theory and practical assessments, as confirmed by IPAF’s official guidance, which states that courses generally last one to two days.

Wondering about the price as well as the duration? You can check out our breakdown of how much IPAF training costs to get a clearer idea of what you should expect to pay.

What Affects IPAF Training Duration?

Before diving into the day‑to‑day structure, it’s worth understanding why training time can vary from one person to another. The duration isn’t random, as it’s shaped by several practical factors that influence how long you’ll need in the classroom and on the machines.

1. Course Categories Make a Big Difference

The category of MEWP you’re learning to operate plays a huge role in the time required. Each machine type has its own operating requirements and safety considerations.

The most common IPAF categories include:

  • 3A – Mobile Vertical (Scissor Lifts)
  • 3B – Mobile Boom (Cherry Pickers)
  • 1B – Static Boom (Vehicle-mounted or trailer-mounted platforms)

More advanced or combined categories – such as a 3A & 3B package – may take a bit longer simply because there’s more ground to cover in both theory and practical training.

2. Your Experience Matters Too

Whether you’re completely new to MEWPs or someone who’s used similar equipment before, your background can influence how quickly you progress. New operators may need more time during practical elements, while experienced operators often feel more confident navigating the assessments.

3. Training Format Can Speed Things Up

Another factor that can shorten your time on site is the learning format. IPAF allows trainees to complete the theory module via eLearning ahead of the practical session, which means you spend less time in the classroom and more time putting your skills into action.

What’s Included in IPAF Training?

Now that you know what affects the length, let’s look at what you’ll actually be doing during the course.

IPAF training is structured to give you the confidence and competence to operate MEWPs safely, so you can expect a well‑rounded mix of knowledge and hands‑on learning.

a) Theory

Before stepping into the operator’s seat, you’ll go through a detailed theory module that covers essential safety and operational topics. This is where you’ll learn about:

This part ensures you understand the “why” behind safe MEWP operation, not just the “how”.

b) Practical

Once the theory is complete, it’s time to put everything into practice. During the practical training, you’ll learn how to:

  • Perform pre-use inspections
  • Navigate MEWPs safely and accurately
  • Manoeuvre in tight or elevated spaces
  • Handle real-world operating scenarios

You’ll finish with both a practical test and a theory assessment, which you must pass to earn your certification.

How Long is Your IPAF Licence Valid?

After completing the course successfully, you’ll receive your Powered Access Licence (commonly known as the PAL Card). This certification is valid for five years, meaning you won’t need to retrain until it expires.

IPAF now issues digital PAL Cards through the ePAL app, making it easier to store and access your credentials whenever needed.
