Safety is of paramount importance for all owners and operators of powered access equipment. Star Platforms offer a range of training courses accredited by the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) covering areas including the selection, management and operation of MEWPs (Mobile Elevated Work Platforms).
Our IPAF accredited trainers can be found at any of our seven depots located around the country where high-quality theory training is combined with practical training. We ensure that future platform operators learn the basics of safe and effective use of mobile elevating work platforms and other powered access machines.
What Is IPAF Training?
IPAF training is a type of training course that will teach you how to use mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) such as cherry pickers, scissor lifts and other boom lifts in a safe way.
What Is Included In IPAF Training?
An IPAF training programme guides candidates through the basics of MEWP operation. Depending on the IPAF course you choose, you could cover a variety of topics related to powered access machines. This will typically include practical training on pre-use checks, pre-delivery inspections, site assessments and operating MEWPs in challenging environments.
Can You Complete an IPAF Course Online?
Want to complete an IPAF course but don’t have the time to come to one of our depots for the whole day? The enhanced online learning experience will allow you to complete IPAF theory training courses at your own pace. You will then only need to complete the practical training and assessment in a half day session.
How Do You Complete IPAF Training?
Once you’ve finished your IPAF training courses, you’ll complete a practical test and a theory test that will allow you to join the ever-growing team of licensed MEWP operators. You will then be awarded an ePAL card, with the option to pay extra for a physical PAL card.
How Do You Get A PAL Card?
Upon completion of an IPAF test, you will be awarded an electronic powered access licence (ePAL card). Your physical PAL card is available for an extra cost. This card will licence you to drive most powered access devices anytime including Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs), Mast Climbing Work Platforms (MCWPs) or Construction Hoists (CHs). This card will be valid for five years and will need to be renewed before the expiration date to avoid re-sitting any IPAF training courses.
Is IPAF a legal requirement?
Technically the training provided by employers doesn’t have to be IPAF training. However, an IPAF training course will cover all the relevant health and safety legislation and guidance on how employees will work at height safely.
Read our blog to find out more about the legal requirements around IPAF training.
Why is it important to provide IPAF training?
According to the 2022/23 annual report completed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the leading cause of deaths for workers is falls from height. In 2022/23, there were 40 deaths, 11 more than the previous year.
Even a fall from a low height, 2m or under, can be fatal. This emphasises the importance of regular adequate training to ensure all your workers are safe when doing their job.
