When beginning a project where working from height is involved, it can be difficult to decide what type of access equipment is the best for your project. With plenty of choice, from scaffolding, cherry pickers, scissor lifts, ladders or low level platforms – there are many to choose from.
Before you decide what equipment to use, it is important to consider all aspects of the project from start to finish. This should include safety considerations, time constraints, the location of the project and the actual task at hand. The equipment you choose should be suitable for the task but also keep your workers safe while the project is being carried out.
Below we discuss the different things to consider which will help you choose the right piece of equipment for your team.
One of the most important things to consider is how high you will need your access equipment to reach. Different types of equipment reach different heights, if you’re only needing a slight increase in height, our low level platforms offer a safe way to travel 3.5 to eight metres. Ladders can be an alternative but when using different tools a low level platform is the safest option.
Scissor lifts are another great option, reaching a working height of up to 22.5 metres and with a load capacity of up to 1134 kg, they are great for working indoors and outdoors safely and easily. They are perfect for tight spaces because of their small size but relatively large manoeuvrability and easy handling.
Cherry pickers, also known as boom lifts, not only provide access to height but also have, out and over capabilities for difficult-to-reach locations – at Star Platforms our cherry pickers have a height access up to 28 metres, an outreach of up to 17.37 metres and a lifting weight of up to 280 kg.
For some projects, you may also require your access equipment to be able to reach over structures such as roofing or below ground r such as under bridges. Our cherry pickers, or boom lifts, are the perfect choice with outreach capabilities of up to 17.37 metres. If your project requires machinery that can operate on rough terrain – we can help.
Another important consideration is the length of your project, will the project take a while? If your project is expected to take a long time in the same place then scaffolding might be the right choice. However, if your project requires access to height in different areas then a powered access platform is a great option as it can be easily moved around as and when it’s needed. In addition, no setup or removal is required.
Hiring access equipment means that if your project takes longer, you can easily extend the length of hire or you can easily swap your equipment out to a different type or model should your requirements change. At Star Platforms, we offer flexible rental agreements that are tailored to you and your projects.
If your project requires different types of tools a powered access platform is a great option to keep your workers safe while easily getting the tools to the height you need them. Powered access platforms have optional material handling attachments which allows material to get to height, improving safety and efficiency
Unlike other traditional methods of access height, such as scaffolding and ladders. Most powered access platforms have secondary guarding which increases safety for workers. Secondary guarding refers to the devices that can protect MEWP operators from potential overhead obstacles. They increase safety by reducing the risk of entrapment by alerting an operator of risk of entrapment and stopping the machinery to protect the operator when a risk is identified.
When working with some types of access equipment, appropriate training is required to keep your workers safe while the machinery is being used. It is a legal requirement to ensure workers can safely operate work at height equipment, even though it is not specified what training – we recommend IPAF training which covers all safety aspects of operating powered access platforms.
At Star Platforms, we are proud to have IPAF accredited trainers at each of our training depots that are committed to providing high quality IPAF training to ensure all future platform operators learn the basics of safe and effective use of mobile elevating work platforms and other powered access machines.
